The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences has an outstanding opportunity for a Forest Ecologist and Pack Forest Manager. This position manages day-to-day forest operations at Pack Forest including: planning, writing, and implementing silvicultural prescriptions and other forest management activities, overseeing Pack Forest's timber harvest program and administering timber sale contracts, and maintaining and administering forest inventory data collection. This person acts as the primary liaison with visiting students and faculty to the forest to support Pack Forest's demonstration, teaching, and research mission, and supports the Director in decision making and administrative duties.
•Forest operations management: Forest operations program management and planning, responsible for timber cruising data collection and analysis, harvest planning, and record keeping; performs contract review and administration; responsible for database management; performs GIS analysis and creates maps; manages continuous forest inventory measurement; performs FVS growth modeling; responsible for timber harvest program including: forest practices compliance, timber sale contract advertisement, harvest operations oversight, log accounting, and logging and log sale records
•Field forestry activities: manages forestry operations (logging, road maintenance, weeding, herbicide application (able to apply for a valid applicators license if needed), hires and oversees outside contractor work as necessary
•Supervisory responsibility: Supervises 1.0 FTE Woods Utility Worker, 3 part-time hourly forestry staff (seasonally), undergraduate and graduate students (as part of classes or spring break/summer interns), and coordinate with graduate students and their supervisor when involved in forestry activities
•Teaching and Research Support: Assists UW Faculty, visiting scientists, graduate and undergraduate students engaged in activities on UW lands. Gives tours and lectures to visiting classes. Organizes and tracks research project data files and proposals. Performs some research through ongoing research programs (NADP), as well as Pack Forest internal research projects. Oversees graduate student projects, most commonly Master of Forest Resources capstone projects
•Community Outreach: Gives field tours, organizes and manages volunteers, attends public meetings, and builds partnerships with key Pack Forest stakeholders, ex: Nisqually River Council, Town of Eatonville, Society of American Foresters, Washington State DNR
•Coordinate with leadership staff at the Pack Forest Conference Center, Mount Rainier Institute, and Canine Conservation to make sure field activities in the forest of those programs are conducted successfully
•Under the guidance of the Director of Center for Sustainable Forestry at Pack Forest the "Forest Ecologist and Pack Forest Manager" executes all day-to-day activities related to managing Pack Forest including: issues of safety (lead safety officer for Pack Forest), stewardship, green certification, risk management, timber harvesting/marketing, planning, recreational use, land records administration, reforestation, silviculture implementation, road planning, and contract negotiation
•To participate in data reduction and analysis from forest inventory, monitoring projects, geospatial analyses, and map-making of forest and other environmental data
•Assist in developing research protocols and writing scientific papers
•1.0 FTE Woods Utility Worker
•Part-time hourly forestry staff (seasonally)
•Undergraduate students (as part of classes or spring break/summer interns)
•May guide the work of undergraduate and graduate students as necessary to achieve specific assignments in Pack Forest
•Works effectively as a member of a team under technical guidance of CSF at Pack Forest Director

•Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, or related field AND
(2-3 years of experience, to include at least 1 year of research experience):
•Experience in forest management (inventory, assessment, planning, implementation, and monitoring), natural resource assessment.
•Ability to effectively work with and communicate with diverse stakeholders is required.
•Computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, GIS required.
•Proficiency in statistics and spatial analyses and map-making using R and/or ArcGIS
•Experience in analysis of forestry and environmental data
•Strong communication, writing, and organizational abilities
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
•A Masters or Doctoral degree in Forestry, Environmental Sciences or related field preferred.
•Experience in areas forest operations.
•Experience with forest growth modeling programs and optimization tools.
Other Conditions of Employment
The position is stationed at Pack Forest, outside of Eatonville, WA. The work requires about 1/2 time in field conditions and required work in all weather conditions. A portion of work time in the field involves operation of saws and heavy equipment and requires the use of personal protective equipment. In addition, the position will require some travel, including last-minute travel, in order to support the academic and research programs at the University of Washington.
